Qualifications of a Hand Therapist:
Education: Most hand therapists begin with a degree in Occupational Therapy (OT) or Physical Therapy (PT).
Certification: To become a Certified Hand Therapist (CHT), professionals must:
- Have practiced as an OT or PT for a minimum of three years, with at least 4,000 hours specifically in upper limb therapy over the past five years.
- Pass the Hand Therapy Certification Examination administered by the Hand Therapy Certification Commission (HTCC).
Continuing Education: Hand therapists are required to engage in ongoing education to maintain their certification, keeping up-to-date with the latest techniques, research, and treatment modalities.
Skills: Knowledge in splinting, anatomy, kinesiology, and specific therapeutic techniques pertinent to upper limb rehabilitation.
Experience: Practical experience in clinical settings with a focus on hand and upper extremity conditions.
These qualifications ensure that hand therapists have the knowledge and skills necessary to provide effective treatment for a wide array of conditions affecting the hand and upper limb, including repetitive strain injuries i.e., carpal tunnel, tennis elbow, osteoarthritic conditions, pre and post-operative care (fracture wrists, elbows, fingers, rotator cuff repairs), sprain and strains of the upper extremity, nerve and brachial plexus injuries or compressions.

Out of respect for your therapists’ time and other patients in need, we require 24 hours advance notice of cancellation. If you cancel your appointment with less than 24 hours notice, or if you do not attend a scheduled appointment, you will be charged a 50% no show fee.
