What to Expect During Acupuncture Treatments:
Acupuncture points are located throughout the body. Sometimes the appropriate points are far removed from the area of pain. The physiotherapist informs the patient about the general site of the planned treatment and if any clothing needs to be removed. If appropriate, a gown, towel, or sheet will be provided for proper draping. The patient then lies on a treatment table in a comfortable position.
Acupuncture needles are very thin, so insertion creates very little if any discomfort. A mild aching sensation may occur. Typically, acupuncture is very relaxing, and clients will sometimes even fall asleep in a safe position. It is important to let your therapist know if any of the points are uncomfortable throughout your treatment and they will come and remove or adjust the needles. Acupuncture needles are left in for 15-40 minutes and then discarded in a sharps container to be safely disposed of at a local pharmacy.
Acupuncture and Dry Needling, what is the difference?
Acupuncture and dry needling may look similar on the surface, but they serve different purposes.
Both involve the use of very thin needles, yet each technique comes from a distinct tradition and offers unique therapeutic benefits.
Acupuncture
Acupuncture is a holistic practice from Traditional Chinese Medicine that aims to restore balance in the body’s energy pathways, known as meridians. Needles are placed at precise points to support the body’s natural healing processes, improve overall function, and address a variety of conditions—from stress and digestive issues to chronic pain.
Dry Needling
Dry needling is a modern, evidence-based technique grounded in Western anatomy. Practitioners insert needles directly into tight muscles or “trigger points” to release tension, reduce pain, and improve movement. It is commonly used for sports injuries, muscle spasms, and localized pain.
Which Is Right for You?
Both acupuncture and dry needling can be effective. Acupuncture offers a whole-body, restorative approach, while dry needling is typically focused on relieving specific muscular problems. Your practitioner can help you choose the technique that best supports your needs and goals.
Acupuncture Services In Winnipeg
Acupuncture is a holistic health technique that stems from Traditional Chinese Medicine practices. Certified practitioners stimulate specific points in the body most commonly by inserting thin needles into the skin using pre mapped out, anatomical lines in the body called meridians. It can stimulate endorphin release, circulation surrounding the points to promote healing and removal of swelling and helps to release myofascial tension.
In traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture is linked to the belief that disease is caused by disruptions to the flow of energy, or qi (energy flow) in the body. Acupuncture stimulates points on or under the skin called acupuncture points or acupressure points, unblocking this qi travelling along the meridians. Western scientific research believes acupuncture stimulates neurohormonal pathways.
